Description

This is probably the earliest true “Custom Shop” experiment made Les Paul by Gibson ever. Made in 1983, this was 1 of a very few hand painted guitars with the “Artsy” guitar collector in mind. Greg Rich, one of Gibson’s inventive artists in Kalamazoo, was all about pushing Gibson into areas of marketing that have never been done before. This Les Paul Custom, Greg said was 1 of 2 that he made. It started life w/a pretty Polaris White finish over a top of the line Custom model. Greg Rich painted a few different paint schemes but this one was a project w/a very special personal touch. Greg, obviously an avid Beatle fan as many of us are, took what he thought was the pinnacle of Beatle period artwork & made this Les Paul his canvas. He designed & painted that famous scene from the “Yellow Submarine” movie on its face depicting the “Fab 4” on that iconic Hill as a perfect painted “Yellow Submarine” swam beneath them as we all remember so well. The face alone is worth a Million Bucks but the back side of the body was even more sensation-able. Greg hand painted Paul, John, George & Ringo in a life like manor reminiscent of their 1st album but with that later period appearance clad with facial hair & hippie style that they exubed on every member of the human race. Soon after this period, Gibson moved from Kalamazoo & have never really made such inventive artwork like this again. Acquired by us by fluke in October 1999 at the Dallas Guitar Show…we have never ever considered selling this prized possession & display it proudly in our home. What can this be worth today ? What will it be worth in our future ? Only our 2 Kids will know…LOL. Enjoy this wonderful piece of Gibson history.
